There is a battle for our minds and modern media often presents images and narratives about life and happiness that are contrary to the Gospel. Today, Dr.Sri explains why the media we consume matters and challenges us to examine whether the media we use is leading us closer to God.

“God made us in such a way that what we put in our minds matters.”

Today we live in a secular culture and the media that surrounds us doesn’t always lead us closer to Christ. Modern media often doesn’t present a vision of life, beauty, success, love, and truth that is compatible with the Gospel. We have to be careful with the shows and movies we watch, the music we listen to, the books we read, and the images we see online because they shape our minds and affect our actions. The media we consume impacts how we perceive reality and what we see as good, true, and beautiful. Additionally, the narratives we learn from the media we consume can change our desires and what we decide to pursue in life.
“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”- Philippians 4:8
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.”- Romans 12:2
“….for though we cannot keep from approving what is right in our conscience we love and encourage what is wrong. So that evil was secured in its seat in by the willingness with which our hearts relinquish it.” – John Henry Newman
As Catholics, we should seek media that lifts our minds to the heavenly and spiritual reality. The reality about God is the truest reality of all and it’s the one that matters most in our lives. The media we consume should point us to Christ and help us become more like him. If the media we use turns our hearts away from Christ, then we should reevaluate our decisions. As disciples of Christ, we are called to have a worldview, an intellect, and a heart shaped by Christ and not the world.
