The Story of Elijah
During the first part of this podcast, Jeff delves into the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal. He describes the confrontation between the two, the result, and the aftermath. Below are the verses to outline this story:
- 1 Kings 18:17-19 The scene is set. Elijah and the prophets of Baal decide to “have it out” on Mount Carmel.
- 1 Kings 18:23-24 The rules for the engagement are set out.
- 1 Kings 18:26-29 The attempt of the prophets of Baal fails.
- 1 Kings 18:30-40 Elijah is successful and defeats the prophets of Baal.
- 1 Kings 19:1-3 Elijah is threatened by Jezebel.
- 1 Kings 19:3-8 Exhausted, Elijah runs for forty days to Mount Horeb.
- 1 Kings 19:9-10 God visits Elijah and asks him why he is in the cave. Elijah responds in despair that he is the only one.
- 1 Kings 19:10-13 Elijah does not hear the Lord in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in the still small voice.
Lessons to Learn from the Story of Elijah
- Elijah fell at the top of his game. Be aware of when you are at the top of your game. Seek the Lord.
- We may ask the question “Did God let Elijah down?” No, he did not. Elijah chose his own plan and gave into fear. We must never submit to fear.
- We need rest. We see Elijah after all that had happened in desperate need of rest. God ministered to him in his rest.
- Do not look for the spectacular to be the norm. Hearts change when the good news of the Gospel is shared with them. They are not changed by the spectacular moments. Prayer and God’s Word surpass spectacular events.
