The Timeless Wisdom of St. John Paul II

Every Knee Shall Bow is back with a brand new season! Michael Gormley and Dave VanVickle are returning to explore the great work of St. John Paul II: The Theology of the Body. Using St. John Paul II’s wisdom, Mike and Dave will be discussing many of the challenges we face today and how we can grow in greater love with God, one another, and ourselves.

Original Solitude

Original Solitude refers to the “aloneness” that Adam experienced before Eve was created.

We read about this “aloneness” in Genesis 2:18-23:

“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle and to the birds of the air and to every animal of the field, but for the man[d] there was not found a helper as his partner. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
 and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called Woman,
for out of Man this one was taken.”

Original Innocence

This idea refers to the innocence that Adam and Eve knew before Original Sin. Because of this innocence they were able to be naked without shame and give themselves to each other as total gift. Genesis 2:25 highlights this idea: “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”

Original Unity

What St. John Paul II meant by Original Unity is that we are meant to give of ourselves. We are each individuals but God created us to be a gift to another.

Original Shame

This concept is what resulted after Adam and Eve ate the fruit. Genesis 3:7 says, “Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.”
