Racism, Non-Catholic Bible Studies, Organ Donation, and Plastic Surgery

Fr. Josh answers questions about racism in the United States, attending non-Catholic Bible studies, organ donation, and plastic surgery. If you have a question, comment, or a response for Fr. Josh, email us at askfrjosh@ascensionpress.com. You may hear your question or comment in an upcoming podcast episode!

Snippet from the Show:

If Jesus Christ desires unity, then what does the Antichrist desire? The devil desires to divide the Body of Christ. One of the ways Satan has successfully divided the Body of Christ and has fostered disunity in the Church of America is through Racism, starting with slavery.

SHOWNOTES

Glory Story (2:49)

There I was in adoration, not looking for any insights, intercessory prayers, or for discernment. I was just going there to be with the love of my life – Jesus.

Listener Feedback (8:35)

Racism (10:49)

At what point are we to speak up against institutional Racism? Where  is the line between politics and church, if we are to treat our brother as we want to be treated? Thank you!

-Mary in Texas

Non-Catholic Bible Studies (22:50)

My friend invited me to a Bible study at her church. They are Baptists. Is there anything wrong should I attend? Thank you.

-Jeanne

Organ Donation (28:07)

I am curious how the church feels about being an organ donor. I have struggled with this for years and recently decided it was the right decision for me to sign up to be one.

-Jessica

Plastic Surgery (30:12)

My question is on the topic of plastic surgery. What does the Catholic Church teach about both permanent surgeries (I.e. breast jobs) and temporary ones (Botox or lip injections)? Does it depend on the surgery/intent? For example, what if someone wants Botox to smooth fine lines versus someone who wants to get a breast lift after having children? On one hand, I understand that it’s altering the “image and likeness that God created us to be.” However, if it makes you feel more confident and you are able to financially afford it, what’s the harm?

-Sarah

Universal Points (37:29)
  1. Racism- We are the body of Christ. We need to fast in order to listen to others who are different than us.
  2. Non-Catholic Bible Studies–Christ wants his body to be one. Define the relationship you’re going to have with another faith community, but don’t be afraid to embrace opportunities to grow in your relationship with God and with your fellow Christians.
  3. Organ Donation–It is a noble thing so long as it doesn’t seriously compromise our own health and limit our ability to live our vocations.
  4. Plastic Surgery–There’s no clear teaching on this from the Church, so we need to use Christian principles to discern how God’s calling you to be the best saint you can be, and always take decisions like this to Jesus in prayer.

Meet Your Host, Fr. Josh Johnson:

While Fr. Josh was raised Catholic, he didn’t like the Church growing up. One day, in adoration, he fell in love with Jesus and received the call to become a priest. Now, Fr. Josh is the pastor for Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Louisiana, and he is a presenter in two of Ascension’s programs: Altaration, and YOU: Life, Love, and the Theology of the Body.
