Our Lord’s Example During Holy Week

What example did Jesus leave us just hours before his Passion, and how are we following it today? Today, Jeff reflects on John 13 and its relation to Holy Week 2021, and how we can follow Christ’s example every day. He also speaks with Anna Mitchell about Bible in a Year, featuring Fr. Mike.

John 13: Jesus Washes the Feet of his Disciples

“When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.’”

John 13:12-15

The attention is not on our Lord in this moment, just moments from his Passion and death on the cross. Instead of focusing on himself, he turns the attention on his disciples, showing them how they must act after he is gone.

No matter what has happened to us this year, you remain in the posture of a servant who longs to serve you. He loves even the one who betrays him. We as disciples will pick up our crosses and follow Christ during Holy Week. We follow him by acting as he did: washing the feet of those around us and serving even those who betray us.

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Galatians 2:20
