Mary: Honor vs. Worship

Are we giving Mary too much attention as Catholics? Will a devotion to her take away from a relationship with Jesus? Dr. Sri discusses these questions in light of the Church’s invitation to honor Mary throughout the month of May.

Shownotes

Mary is Our Spiritual Mother

Before Jesus died, he gave Mary to us as our spiritual mother (John 19:27). Bound by the Fourth Commandment to honor our father and mother, we are called to honor both our earthly and spiritual mothers, and we imitate Jesus by doing so.

Learn About Mary

If you feel like you know Mary but desire to deepen your relationship, or are looking for ways to honor Mary, consider learning more about her by meditating on the following scriptures in prayer:

  • Luke 1:26
  • John 2:1-11
  • John 19:26-27
  • Revelation 12
Walking with Mary: A Biblical Journey from Nazareth to the Cross

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in they mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee to we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Amen.
