Scripture Passages Regarding Wealth

1 Tim. 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs.”

1Tim. 6:17-19 “As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches but on God who richly furnishes us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good deeds, liberal and generous. Thus, laying up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life which is life indeed.”

Stories of People with Money

Rich Ruler
Luke 18:18-23 “And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said, “All these I have observed from my youth.” And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and **you will have treasure in heaven**; and come, follow me.” But when he heard this, he became sad, for he was very rich.”

Lydia
“We remained in this city some days; and on the sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to give heed to what was said by Paul. And when she was baptized, with her household, she besought us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.” (Acts 16:12-15)

The riches of the young ruler (Luke 18:18-25) clouded his thinking and hindered his union with Jesus but Lydia, a dealer in expensive purple cloth (Acts 16:14), worshiped the Lord with an open heart and was baptized.

4 Things 1 Timothy 6 Tells Us to Do

1. Don’t become arrogant!
In Deuteronomy 8:18 Moses reminds us, “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.”

2. Don’t put your hope in your wealth.
Proverbs 23:5 says, “Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.”

3. Be Rich in Good Deeds!
Ephesians 2:10 tells us: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”

  • Pride – Humility
  • Greed – Charity
  • Envy – Kindness
  • Anger – Compassion
  • Lust – Purity
  • Gluttony – Temperance
  • Sloth – Diligence

4. Be Generous!
“The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor 9:6-7).
