Top 5 Miracles in the Bible (According to You)

by The Ascension Team | Apr 19, 2024 | Ascension Articles, General Interest | 18 comments

If you could witness any miracle from the Bible, which one would it be? We asked Catholics this question, and their answers may surprise you! After sifting through nearly 1,000 responses, here are the Top 5 Miracles in the Bible with a few honorable mentions.

1. Resurrection

“‘Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.'”

Luke 24:5

For Catholics, the Resurrection is the cornerstone of our faith. It symbolizes the triumph of life over death and the promise of eternal salvation. It’s certainly no surprise the miracle of Christ’s Resurrection came in first place. Who wouldn’t want to see a dead man rise and fulfill God’s plan for humanity?

2. Wedding Feast at Cana

“The mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come.'”

John 2:3-4

Coming in second place, the miracle at Cana holds profound significance for Catholics as it marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. For his first miracle, Jesus chose to turn water into wine. It also highlights the importance of Mary’s intercession and her role as the Mother of God. That’s a wedding we would all want to be guests at! It undoubtedly was a night to remember!

3. Transfiguration

“And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.”

Matthew 17:2-3

Following Cana, we have the Transfiguration. This miracle foreshadowed Jesus’ Resurrection and the glory of the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s hard to beat this event. The presence of Moses and Elijah signified the continuity between the Old and New Testaments. It also confirmed Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. Can we blame Peter for wanting to set up some tents and hang out with these three holy men?

4. Parting the Red Sea

“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.”

Exodus 14:21

If there is only going to be one Old Testament miracle in the Top 5, it makes sense this is it. The parting of the Red Sea is a pivotal event in salvation history, symbolizing God’s absolute power. Imagine the liberation the Israelites must have felt at seeing this sea part in two! It also serves as a reminder that God keeps his promises and is faithful to his covenant. This miracle is quite a start to the journey toward the Promised Land!

5. Raising Lazarus

“He cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out.’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth.”

John 11:44

For our final Top 5 Miracles in the Bible, we have the raising of Lazarus from the dead. We thought this might be at the top. After all, that’s not something you see every day. This miracle not only reveals Jesus’ divinity but also his humanity, as Scripture says Jesus wept and shared in the sorrow of Lazarus’ loved ones. The raising of Lazarus serves as a powerful reminder of Jesus’ promise of eternal life to all who believe in him.

Honorable Mentions

6. Jesus Calms the Waters

We couldn’t have this list without a mention of this miracle. When Jesus calms the storm in the Gospels, he showcases his authority over even the strongest forces of nature. All he has to do is speak and the wind and waves obey him. This miraculous event not only demonstrates Jesus’ divine power but also reveals his care and concern for his followers.

7. Healing the Woman with Hemorrhages

This was surprisingly a popular miracle in our groups! This might be because it speaks to God’s ability to heal everyone. Despite suffering for years and being considered unclean according to Jewish law, the woman approaches Jesus in faith, believing that even just touching his garment would bring healing. Jesus, recognizing her faith, not only heals her physical ailment but also restores her to a state of wholeness and dignity. For Catholics, this serves as a powerful reminder of Jesus’ love and mercy.

8. Jesus’ Ascension

Many of you wanted to witness the Ascension. This miracle marks the moment when Jesus, after his Resurrection, ascended into heaven in the presence of his disciples. For Catholics, it is a culmination of Jesus’ earthly ministry and a transition to his exalted position at the right hand of God the Father. Here at Ascension, we have to agree it’s a pretty powerful miracle!

9. Feeding of the 5,000

This is one of the most famous miracles in the Bible, therefore, deserving a place on this list. Feeding the 5,000 challenges believers to have faith in God’s ability to provide abundantly, even in the face of apparent scarcity. It’s hard to picture what exactly this miracle would look like. Maybe that’s why so many of you wanted to see it!

10. The Nativity

And finally, who wouldn’t want to be there on the night of our Lord’s birth? After all, it does fulfill ancient prophecies. The miracle of the Incarnation must have been a powerful and beautiful sight. Many of you wondered what the angelic proclamation to shepherds sounded like. How big was the stable? What did Jesus look like as a baby?

The faith of the woman with hemorrhages who felt if she could just touch his cloak and she would be healed. She received more than she probably was asking of the Lord. The strength of her faith is inspiring.

Who can deny the power of God given to the Resurrected Son, Jesus Christ and all Jesus did with His obedience and Love for doing the Will of our Father and fidelity to His Wisdom and His Word for our salvation. Praise and prayer to the Father our Creator, to the Son our

Parting of the Red Sea, watching the Angel of the Lord look for blood on those houses to avoid, … Seeing Lot’s wife turn back to view her transformation (grab some pretzels), watching how Enoch got whisked away… Guess i’m OldTestamen-fashioned. 😯😅
