QUIZ: What Does the Church Teach on These Political Issues?

by Shelby Mayer | Sep 12, 2020 | Formation | 6 comments

Note: All correct answers for this quiz were taken directly from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as cited in our new book, Clear Conscience: A Catholic Guide to Voting.

CCC 2265 is clearly referring to arms handled “by those who hold legitimate authority”, i.e. police and military. And there’s absolutely nothing in the Catechism and our church’s social teaching that forbids the income tax, that’s just absurd. I don’t mean to be rude, but you’re misleading the faithful; please quit reading the Catechism through a Libertarian lense, and maybe brush up on Rerum Novarum or something by Fr. Pesch.

For sure, read Faithful Citizenship but this quiz is a good starting point. I appreciate that you made it quite comprehensive.

As much as we would like, we cannot always vote just on one issue . That doesn’t mean we give up on striving to correct the wrong like abortion. We can continue to take action. We don’t give up, but we must look at all of life. Choices are not always easy or clear. However, I feel I can vote Democratic at this time & be Catholic. I am for all life. Example the current administration is for capital punishment. That is taking life too. It is not an easy decision. People should not judge. For a priest to say you are not catholic if you vote Democratic is wrong.

Some of these misrepresent Catholic teaching in their supposed ‘correct’ answers. It’s better to stick with the guidance from the Bishops: https://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/forming-consciences-for-faithful-citizenship-title

I agree. Unless Ascension cites passages from CCC, or otherwise documents what these choices are based on, I am going to assume that they are personal opinion rather than Church teaching.
