All Bible in a Year Episodes

This is what I’ve been looking for, for a long time.

This plan, “Read the Bible in a Year” is such an exciting part of my life already! I have read through every page and listened to all the introductions and thank you for this journey ahead! God is using you (Father, Jeff, and those who contributed) to build us up for His glory. This is a holy effort!

Ready to listen! Thank you Father and Jeff Cavins for your dedication. I have been gearing up staff and students for this for months

Day 1: In the Beginning was a beautiful presentation of my oft-read Bible beginnings – and I really thought I would be a bit bored, with the readings anyway… I WAS SO SURPRISED!!! It was great to both HEAR it, and explore it as Fr Mike went on… 🙂

Fr. Schmitz, your readings and explanation are excellent. Please start each podcast with a short prayer. Thanks.

Do we also need to understand that Adam and Eve didn’t exist? That is metaphorial speaking?

I’ve done this Bible study through a church twice. It truly will set you on fire in your faith and each time you do it you will learn something new. Can’t wait to experience this with Fr. Mike Schmitz. It is so wonderful that we can participate in this way. Thank you so much for offering this Bible study!

How is it that a good and perfect God wound up creating a world that would turn out to be imperfect (fallen)? I say God created because God’s omniscience would have told Him that things were not going to work out to be good/perfect as He had intended. Why did God not backup (so to speak) and in fact simply create a perfect world. Further, why did God at least not even warn Adam and Eve that there was evil (Satan) present in the world and that their obedience would be tested? It seems that this looks like/makes God complicit in the fall.

Creation is so good! Thanks for your time and dedication to this podcast. Cannot wait for the salvation plan to unfold in my life! Praying for you Fr. Mike, Jeff Cavins, and Ascension Presents!!

This a wonderful new years resolution. I my made a commitment to myself to follow and learn the Bible everyday with Fr. Mike. Day 1 and day 2 have been great learnings and I will share this invitation with my family and friends. This pandemic has given me the time and the silence to finally read the whole Bible with Fr. Mike. Thank you for making this available to those who are thirsting for God!

Fr. Schmitz, you stated in your analysis of the Genesis reading, that God didn’t want Adam & Eve to eat of the Tree of Life so that they would not live forever in the now fallen and sinful world. That statement seems to imply that God intended that they would one day be with Him in Heaven (obviously way before Jesus time and His saving sacrifice on the Cross). This makes me ask, if God is going to forgive Adam & Eve, who caused the collapse of His perfect world, can any of us today actually commit a sin greater than Adam & Eve committed? Would God, therefore, not simply save everyone? How could Adam & Eve possibly be in Heaven and anyone else excluded?

I am loving this so much!! Thank you for this guided tour and covering the Bible in such rich depth. I have read much of the Bible, but never the whole thing. I am really looking for to this year now, and I am recommending this to everyone I know—both people who I know want a deeper relationship with God, and those who I know will bite when they get these first “tastes”.

So far I am finding it very interesting, and enjoying the explanation. I have taken “The Bible Time-Line”, by Jeff Session, a few years ago. However i am enjoying Father mike Shmitz explanation of the readings. I am sending links to at least about 33 of my friends to watch this podcast. One more important comment, is that it is not too long, easy to listen each day.

At 16:17 the word ‘light’ means conscious light/spiritual light/Divine Light/’all’ light….more than just or only physical light.

Its fascinating to read the Bible with Fr. Mike thank you for giving your precious time to us . There is so many hard names to be remembered but I really enjoy to be here thank you.
I think God gets really mad with Eve and Adam because he didn’t expect to hear them accusing each other. If they apologized and defend their partners God maybe would have forgiven them.

Are the years as discussed in day 3, genesis chapters 5 & 6, the same as the years we experience? If so, those people lived very long lives!

The Bible in a year podcast with Father Mike is truly a blessing. So easy, so doable and just perfect. The timing of each podcast is right, the set up and delivery is right and it’s such a great thing for all Catholics. If a day is missed one can easily go and catch up. If something said needs to be listened to again one can just go back and re-listen. NO excuses not to learn more about God’s Word! Thank You to all of those involved for doing this and may God bless you all.

Really enjoying the one year Bible. Father Schmitz is doing a good job on the commentary!!! I wish we would start out with a prayer before the reading asking the Holy Spirit to open our eyes, ears and heart to Gods word!!! Instead of after the reading. Or including the prayer before the commentary, and again at the very end after the commentary! Gods says in all things pray!!!

One of the best bible teaching programs I have ever experienced and I am 75 years old!

I have a question about something in Chapter 1 of Genesis and associated remarks in chapters 7-9. Regarding “clean” foods when the law was not yet given to man and there were no dietary laws. Chapter 1 seems to say all beasts, birds, fish and every green thing were given to Adam to husband and to eat. Fr mike’s podcast. How do I direct my question?

First, I just do not see how you get a connection incest with Ham seeing his fathers nakedness. More detail is needed here. Second, seemingly, no sooner is the flood over Noah’s family on dry ground than yet again a perfect and good God cannot seem to restart a perfect world. Ham sins almost immediately and we’re off and running into yet another fallen world scenario. It begs the question, why does God not pay attention to His omniscience and not go forward with plans He must know are not going top work the way He wants?

I have watched the first video and I want to catch up with Bible in a year. I just heard about it from my parish priest this morning.

In other interpretations of Genesis 9 the bow is not an archer’s bow, it is a rainbow. Can someone expand on that?

I love these podcasts and am looking forward to learning much more about the amazing story of God’s love. I am not getting the podcasts through my Apple Podcasts and am having difficulty in locating them through my email messages. I have listened up to Day 5 but cannot find Day 6. I have subscribed and have printed and saved the Bible in a Year Reading Plan. I would appreciate your help in accessing the new daily readings. Thank you in anticipation and I pray God’s blessings on you and your work. As an aside, I use many of Fr Mike Schmitz’s YouTube clips in my RCIA program; the candidates and team members love them as they provoke much discussion and thought, invariably drawing us all closer into the Divine Life of the Trinity. Why would God punish Pharaoh who did not know Sari was Abrams wife. Why was Abram not the one punished? Knowing that Satan is the provocateur of sin, why would God continue to allow him to wander the world and to taunt God into allowing him to torment innocent Job? I have never been able to understand the Book of Job. It seems like God being omnipotent could have easily done away with Satan from the very beginning and avoided all of the chaos he creates in the rest of the bible story; including the need for Jesus to die. This baffles me to this day. I suspect the/your answer will be the typical ‘it’s a mystery of faith the we are not privy to’. Further, will anyone ever answer these comments? If not, I can just stop submitting them.

Day 6, Jan 6, Fr. Mike you introduced as to Abram, Job, Sirai and Lot, the studies going so interesting because I was able to see my life in their lives. It strengthened my faith to trust myself to the Lord my creator and redeemer. God bless you Fr. Mike. Amen

Hi, I’m loving the poscasts and Father Mike, but I am also trying to download the Great Adventure Bible that Fa. Mike talks about. I don’t see it here. Thanks!

Dear Fr Mike, We were SO thrilled when our first born, a healthy daughter, was born in 1975. Then, 10 days later we discovered she had a VERY rare, always fatal condition, which through God’s mercy and grace she miraculously survived. But she had a massive stroke which left her with Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and legally blind. We know that “by all that’s known medically” she should not have survived, or if she survived the most we could have expected is that she’d be a total vegetable. She’s 45 years old, getting ready to move into her own apartment. She has most of the Bible memorized and loves the Lord with all her heart. Our second daughter was born in 1978. She was born with hydrocephalus, water on the brain. Just before the surgery to implant a shunt, the Lord miraculously and totally healed her. Well meaning Christians have told us many times, if we could figure out the “hidden sin” in our lives, our daughters would not have suffered. (I have such a struggle with the OBVIOUS sin in my life, I felt like a child abuser by not uncovering the “hidden sin” in my life.) Then I discovered the Gospel of John 9: 1-3 (Who sinned that this man was born blind? Him or his parents? Neither. This man was born blind so that the Glory of the Lord might be displayed in him.) God’s mercy and grace shines through BOTH my daughter’s lives. Both are strong in the Lord and in sharing His love daily. So I thank God for all the times we sat in the hospital wondering why. I thank God for allowing my feeble faith to be forced to rely on Him. No one else gave us hope. No one else thought any of this possible. Thank you Father Mike for this Bible study. I reminds me of what He has done and is doing in my life. Prayers ascending for you as we go on this adventure. (Sorry it’s so long.) Barb

I find that I really dislike the concept of God having a “perfect” and in particular a “permissive” will. It seems to me like Catholic semantic gobly gook. God is sovereign over all things, God is omnipotent and omniscient. In our world someone with such power would be thought to be complicit in any wrong doing that they knew would occur and they had the power to prevent. Why don’t we just separate the “permissive” from His “will” and simply acknowledge that whatever happens is in fact what God willed to happen?

Why are the sons of Benjamin in the Catholic Bibles I have different from the ones read here? In Genesis 46:21, my Bible lists the sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ahiram, Shupham, Hupham, and Ard. The Bible used for these readings lists the sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. Does anyone know why the difference?

I posted this question on Facebook #askjeffcavins but not sure whether it would be seen. I would love some feedback on the beginning of Job where there seems to be a discussion between God and the devil. I have always had an issue with this as it makes humans seem like pawns being played. I have therefore disliked this book in the bible.

Job suffering is a reminder that we will trust our God the Almighty
because he knows us very well even our name. Fr. Mike you make this reading realistic in terms of suffering, you are correct it makes you sensitive and good person, so that it is not heavy to carry the cross. Bless you abundantly for all the time and knowledge you share with us. God bless us as all. Amen.

There is something that Father Mike said that I can’t find where he came up with that conclusion. In Genesis 37 it talks about the dreams that Joseph had. At the end of day 18’s reading he made mention that Joseph and Benjamin don’t know each other. Then the next day he reiterated it and again on Day 24. I have searched the scriptures for myself and it doesn’t say that Joseph didn’t know his little brother. Can you please explain this position?

The Bible in a year is truly a gift. Reading along with Father Mike enables one to ponder what is being read. The excitement that Father has when he explains the chapters is carried over into my heart. The wisdom of the Old Testament is being revealed in ways that I can finally understand. Connecting what was read to the Psalms is also enlightening. Thank you for this opportunity.

This scriptures helped me to understand Passover, the significant of it. Makes my faith so deep through the knowledge I gain in reading the scriptures and reflections of Fr. I am so thankful for Fr. Mike and for this Bible in a Year podcasts, and for Jeff Cavins for creating and developing the Bible Timeline and the color-coded Great Adventure Bible.

Going through these podcasts has renewed my faith tremendously and made me see the scriptures in a different light. I feel like I am in it and part of the whole story. I can feel the presences, if that makes sense, of all the other people also journeying with me in these stories.

Fr. Mike, your enthusiasm is very contagious, like you, I can not wait for the next podcast, and I keep looking forward to it during the day, at work; I have to stop myself from checking my phone every time to see if the new one is on. I also, do not want to overdo it, lest it fizzles out. It just brings me joy and warms my heart to savor God’s gift and grace all through my day.

I would like to encourage others to begin the study “late”. Is there anything in the works to make this easier? I have the App on my phone, and started after my children. I find it a little difficult to get to the right program, and then when it finishes, instead of going forward, it goes to the previous show. For those who begin later, his will be a problem.

Is the light that is to continuously burn outside the curtain of the holy place the precurser of our sanctuary light?

In episode 14 you mentioned that Isaac could not take away the blessing from Jacob even though Jacob deceived his father. You stated that a blessing even if given this way is not revocable. You likened it to Catholic sacraments.
Why then does a spouse have the right to an annulment on the grounds of being deceived by their spouse; i.e., the spouse left out information about their past, etc. that would probably be halted the marriage? Once the priest gives the blessing to the couple, how can the Church revoke it and state there never was a marriage?

I think all Christians – Catholic or Protestant should undertake this life changing journey. I have been a Christian for a long time and this will be the first time I have read the Bible cover to cover. Father Mike is great at explaining things! Keep up the good work! Christians get started today in order to truly know your Faith.

I was curious if you could address God’s wrath that he was going to send down on his people and how Moses “convinces” God not to destroy them, but when Moses goes down the mountain he does pretty much what God was going to do. Moses talks to God and says to God what God already said to Moses. Could you help me understand or make sense of it.

Never having read the entire bible, this is such a great opportunity and very doable! Thank you. My only disappointment is with the Bible Translation. It is SOOOO different from the translations and familiarity we Catholics have become accustomed to hearing, both read and sung. The different language (words which actually change much of the meaning) makes it impossible to memorize the scriptures with which were are familiar. I’d really like to have the traditional translation back!

We love, love, love these daily bible reading, and learning so much. But I do have a question. What on earth is a mercy seat? I’ve been trying to picture what it might be in my mind, but it just gets muddled.

With current political environment, Day 63 hits home painfully. Much of this is our battle, and we shouldn’t leave it for our children.

In all the years I have heard this story I never thought of this…Why did the Israelites go without meat when they were traveling with their herds? Were the cattle saved for God?

Fr. Mike, thank you so much for your commentary on the Bible in a Year series. I once read the entire Bible straight through on my own (if Edgar Casey could read it once a year – every year of his life – I can read once) but this is downright enjoyable! I look forward to daily readings! Day 62 really got to me. I’m currently facing a possible bone marrow transplant for my brother. We haven’t exactly been on the same page in many years, but yes, this is so much more important than our differences. Thank you.

Day 63, Fr. Mike you strongly reminding us not to fear and distrust the Lord, you are like Moses in Numbers14. In Deuteronomy 12 thank you for explaining to us that the Lord wants us to have one sacred place to worship him. God bless you abundantly. Amen.

Day 66, Quite complicated to understand the message that the scriptures in Numbers18 and Deuteronomy 19-20 were relaying but with Fr. Mike reflections and explanations it makes sense the purpose of God in choosing Israelites to be faithful to Him, so that He will bless the world. Thank you Fr. Mike, I will be praying that God mercy will be with you and all the people in the world. Amen.

So articulate in sharing the past and the present times in Deuteronomy 21, when Jesus fulfilled the promise being hanged in the cross , as well Number 19-20 when Mosses struck the rock instead of talking to the rock, thank you Fr. What did I miss? In the previous paragraph, did not God tell Balaam to go with the princes? Now God is angry that Balaam went with them, I don’t get it. Also, I did not pick up anywhere that Balaam had decided to say one thing and do another.

It makes no sense (to me) to say God has/had a Plan A, B, C, etc. Being omniscient, God would know a priori that Plan A wasn’t going to work. It seems, therefore, whatever plan you want to say God used was indeed the one He chose to use. Similarly, God knew at the time of creation, that Adam and Eve would sin and, therefore, there would be no perfect creation for all. I’d love to hear further discussion of this point.

It seems that the cycle the Israelites when through over and over is no different than our cycle today. We confess our sins and receive forgiveness and then go out commit those same sins once again. Then we are back to confessing our sins and around we go. What happens on judgement day when we are still stuck in this cycle?

Ruth 2, what an inspiring woman and inspiring words from Fr. Mike, there is always a glimmer of hope as long as you walk your life with our redeemer Jesus Christ. God bless you Fr. Mike and all podcast followers. Amen.

So, when someone that God uses to accomplish some purpose of His but they also drift away or do some evil, what are we to assume has or will become of them in the end time? Will they enter Heaven for doing God’s will or will they be punished for doing evil? On this day, Judas is a good example. He gave up Jesus to the authorities so that God’s plan would be accomplished through the conduct of an evil deed. To me he (Judas) had no real choice, God’s will was going to be accomplished. So, is/will Judas enter Heaven? I find such examples throughout scripture to be very troubling. If God uses someone in this manner, does He reward them or condemn them?

Judges 13-15, the famous Samson, now I knew the real Samson, whose weakness was his downfall, thanks Fr. Mike for addressing our weakness that we need to be humbled and ask God to heal and purify us fo all our shortcomings. Have a blessed Easter weekend. Amen.

Judges 21:25 “at that time there was no king in Israel and everyone did what seemed right to him”, therefore the people do whatever pleases them, they need a leader to lead them. I am excited for the next book we will be reading, thank you Fr. Mike for the knowledge we learned in the book of Judges, a story of all the brokenness of the people of Israel. Lesson learned from 1 Samuel 3-5, when God called Samuel he listened and told Eli of what God told him, Eli should corrected her sons from sin and did the repentance but he didn’t do it. Jesus priestly prayer to the Father in John 17, was so powerful and deep that he truly loves us, as his disciple. John 16-18, scriptures were so written eloquently and thank you Fr. What is the purpose of reading all the names in Chronicles? I doubt that most people can remember any of it after a mere few seconds. Why is it even deemed important to be in the canon?

2 Samuel 4, what a tragic story, the death of Ish-bosheth, thank you Fr. Mike in explaining that David’s rule under the Law of God, he shown mercy to his enemy and punished the killer of Ish-bosheth.
