Bible Time Period: Royal Kingdom
You established a kingdom on your servant David and promised him an eternal throne: Establish your kingdom in our midst.
Reflection
The “holy bread” or “bread of the Presence” in chapter 21 was an offering of thanks placed daily before the Lord in the Holy Place in the Tabernacle. It was meant to be eaten only by the priests, but Ahimelech makes a compassionate decision to feed David’s men with it.
If some of this seems familiar, you may recognize it from the Sunday Gospel readings at Mass. Read Matthew 12:3-4 if you want to see how Jesus uses 1 Samuel 21 in his teaching regarding the Sabbath laws.

Compare and contrast the actions of David and King Saul in these chapters. Why does David spare Saul when he has the opportunity to kill him?
