Why We Tithe

Jackie began to tithe when she had a deeper conversion at age eighteen. She recognized that everything she had came from God anyway, so what’s ten percent for the God who will not be outdone in charity?

The Gospel of Luke tells us:

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Luke 6:38

Furthermore, the fifth precept of the Church says the faithful shall provide for the needs of the Church:

“The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what is necessary for divine worship, for apostolic works and works of charity, and for the decent sustenance of ministers.”

Canon 222, see also Catechism of the Catholic Church 2043

And St. Paul writes:

“The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work.”

2 Corinthians 9:6-8

What is it that God is asking of you? Search the intention of the heart.
